If there is one cozy, warm fabric you want to invest in for fall/winter 08, it’s suede. Whether in coloured, autumnal or neutral shades, this rich textile is soft as butter. Both ladieswear and menswear collections hit the runways this season with elegant and versatile suede footwear, satchels, gloves and more. However, prone to soiling and staining, this supple, nappy leather is delicate and must be worn and handled with care.

Protect your decadently soft, suede-leather items from scuffing, flattening, water-damage and oil staining by following a few simple, pre-cautionary steps.
Be sure to store your soft, brushed suede items appropriately. The luxurious nap of this coveted textile is naturally very porous. As a result, it is important to store your suede items in a manner where they can breathe. A damp environment can be damaging and may cause water condensation, mould and mildew. Once mildewed, most leather suede items cannot be restored.
Any sort of plastic bag or enclosure should also be avoided. Cotton or flannel cases are best for suede storage. They will protect your pieces from light (which can cause fading) while also allowing for natural air circulation.
Just like any other piece of great clothing, you will want to be careful not to spray perfume or hair products too close as these can soil or ruin your garment. Makeup and sweat stains devastate any look- no matter how much money you spent on the piece.
What if you're caught in the rain carrying your brand new suede handbag? First, don't panic. Gently pat your suede item with a clean cloth or paper towel to soak up all of the excess moisture. Do not attempt to speed the process by using a blow dryer or any other sort of heat dryer, but rather allow the leather to dry naturally. Finally, once the item has dried completely, use a suede brush to sweep in the natural nap and texture.
Dirt and oil stains can be a bit trickier. If you've managed to get dirt or mud on your hot, new suede boots, let the mud dry. A nail file can be used to softly remove the dried up dirt and to even out any scuff marks. Again, go over the suede lightly with a suede brush to restore the nap and texture.
If you come across an oil stain, the best way to maintain the beauty of your suede garment, is by gently rubbing talcum powder directly over the damaged area. Leave the powder to set for about 2 hours. If, after acouple of hours, you've removed the powder and the stain is still evident, repeat the process.
If you're ever in doubt, bring your luxurious suede items to a professional leather cleaner.
Exceedingly comfortable and an absolute must-have for fall, suede garments are delicate and beautiful. Just be sure to wear, store and clean your lavish suede with care.
